Exhibition Text: This triptych was inspired by the work of Egon Schiele and Magdalena Lamri, these artists were incorporated into the piece through the lighter skin tones, the incomplete nature of the forms, and the vacant expression shown in Schiele's work. The piece was meant to represent myself and how I interact with my environment, I attempted to symbolize the violence that occurs in Milwaukee and how it has personally affected me, the second panel is how I view myself, and the third panel is an attempt to symbolize how I want to create a peaceful and prosperous environment in the city of Milwaukee.

Inspiration
This triptych was inspired by the work of Magdalena Lamri and Egon Schiele. Lamri is a Paris based painter who creates work that combines realistic painting techniques with darker subject matter. When painting figures she often adds natural elements to these realistic techniques, often incorporating deer or other animals into the form, The painting I chose to use by her is Morceaux Choisis, this painting features the chest and lower portion of the face which are both angled up. The face is blurred and the shoulders appear to melt away into nothing. There are also many abstract marks on the piece which add a sense of brokenness. I painted two versions of this piece which are the outer two paintings of the triptych. Both of the figures face inward towards the middle painting. One painting features many red marks which symbolised blood and the other painting had many green marks and an overall greater sense of unity which was meant to symbolise environmental awareness.
Egon Schiele was an Austrian printer and painter who specialised in creating distorted figures which defy conventional standards of beauty. These figures were often distorted to a level that could often be described as frightening. The figures were bony and the limbs were stretched out and the clothes were sometimes incomplete. I used his painting Portrait of Dr Heirich as inspiration for the central painting in my triptych. I emulated his distorted figures by making my face bony and my fingers elongated and skinny. I also didn't completely finish the body which is meant to represent how I am currently an incomplete person.

Process
Brainstorming
I first started this project by conceptualizing my meaning and attempting to connect it to an artist. I immediately thought about using the work of both Schiele and Lamri, as they are both artists I'm fond of. |
Planning Sketches
At this point I began to sketch out my ideas, this is where I decided to use the two floating heads on the sides and the portrait at the center. Originally I planned on using a river scene in the center with two portraits on the outside but I abandoned that idea which I regret because I believe it would have turned out much better if I had followed that plan. |
|
Painting
Once I had all of my ideas sketched out I built the canvasses and used a projector to project my rough sketches onto the canvas. I painted the portrait first and waited to painted the other two after I was done with it. For the portrait I experimented with a variety of skin tones, I originally attempted to create a realistic skin tone but as I progressed I began to use much more gray hues. I also attempted to build up lots of texture in the painting which was achieved successfully in several spots. |
Reflection
This triptych ended up being time consuming and I was unable to achieve the look and meaning that I originally intended for the piece. I had lots of setbacks while creating it, mainly being my inability to choose a meaning or content and I was constantly rethinking my ideas. I was immediately able to choose Schiele as my art inspiration but I rethought the content on a daily basis and could never finalize my ideas which meant that when I finally chose what to paint I had very little time to do it. Having little time to complete the project meant that the final piece ended up looking sub par and the meaning was not easily comprehensible. The piece was supposed to show how I am an incomplete person, how I want to create an prosperous environment and how the violence in Milwaukee has affected me but this is difficult to understand due to a lack of any emotion in the piece and the only visual cues are the color schemes.

Act Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork
Schiele's work features grotesque, bony figures with elongated features which is shown in the center painting and Lamri's painting shows a distorted figure half blurred which is shown in the side paintings.
What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The information about Schiele and Lamri mainly focused on the meaning behind her work and did not discuss her as a person.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
My central theme was how I am an incomplete person, and how I have been affected by Milwaukee's violence and how I want to change that by making the city a more prosperous and peaceful environment,
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
