Inspiration
The inspiration for this piece came from the work of Syrian artist Ayham Jabr. He is a Surreal Collage Artist, a Video Editor, a Videographer and a Graphic Designer currently working out of Damascus Syria. His work generally revolves around surrealist interstellar themes, taking the viewer to another world. He is heavily influenced by science fiction and outer space, he said in a recent interview "I’m a huge fan of science-fiction films, and have always been fascinated by the beauty of an outer space world around us, which we hardly know anything about". My work reflected these themes by using a background that resembled space and I placed a large figure on top of it. This figure with the space background was intended to create a sci-fi like look, although my meaning was intended to be about religion and science fiction.

Process
Brainstorming
When starting this project I was already aware of my artist inspiration so I began by looking for images that reflected space. I also looked at some other artists to consider taking inspiration from, like Holly-Anne and BuckAnnegret Soltau but I ended up sticking to my original inspiration. |

Creation of the Collage and Drawing
To create the collage I cut out the images I found that could reflect themes of religion and science fiction. I then took these images and played with different ways to arrange them in order to create a surrealist look. This ended up being cutting up a photo of a woman in a long flowing dress and dividing that up into two pieces and then placing other elements behind/on top of it. Once I glued these images onto the paper I grabbed a sheet of paper and began sketching a rough outline of the final collage in order to create the drawing. Once I had a general outline I decided which drawing techniques I would use in which places. Once I had decided this I began to draw these in, starting at the bottom and using graphite to draw the lower part of the dress. I then moved to the spot on the left and used a scumbling technique. I then moved up and used ink lines in an attempt to achieve a flowing texture. I then moved to the upper part of the dress and used charcoal (which ended up working pretty nicely) to create a smooth look. I then moved to the head and used a stippling techniques which didn't look as nice, rather sped through and uneven.

Reflection
Having finally completed with this piece I am disappointed with both the final piece and myself. I originally wanted it to have a sci-fi look and I for it to be smooth looking and take out any signs that these were images cut from magazines. I was somewhat able to create the sci-fi look but was still not up to my expectations, and the images look not neatly cut up close. I also wanted my final drawing to be very close to my collage and I failed at that, the drawing is messy and unrealistic. My meaning was also disappointing, intertwining religion and science fiction was messy and it's difficult to understand what I was trying to say with the piece.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork
My inspiration creates sci-fi collages with surrealist elements, I emulated this by using a space like background with a large, strange figure.
What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author of the article I used for my research was purely factual and seemed free of any bias towards the artist.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
Science fiction/religion
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
